The Water Island Adventures Tour

Our ferry picks up tour passengers on a regular schedule from the cruise ship dock on St. Thomas (call/e-mail for information). The first part of the excursion is a tour of the sights along shore as the ferry glides through the historical St. Thomas Charlotte Amalie harbor. Passing along the busy waterfront, the lovely shops and historic buildings, some of which date back to the 17th century, are pointed out. The ferry passes Hassel Island, goes through the Frenchtown cut, past Subbase on St. Thomas and lands at Phillip's Landing on pristine Water Island. Arrival on Water Island leaves all the hustle and bustle on St. Thomas far behind.

Disembarking on Water Island, passengers board the Bike Bus for the short ride to the highest point on Water Island at Fort Segarra, where they find bikes, helmets and water bottles waiting. (All bikes used for the Water Island Adventures Bike tour are made by Cannondale.)

After a brief orientation, riders are outfitted with their helmets, given a few tips about safety and riding a mountain bike and then they are fitted onto the proper size bikes with water provided on each bike. Meandering downhill to a rolling dirt road, they visit an old hotel site (which was the inspiration for Herman Wouks classic "Dont Stop the Carnival"). A stretch of pavement leads to another dirt road and the site of a 17th century plantation. Backtracking on the last dirt road the excursion winds up at beautiful Honeymoon Beach for a refreshing swim and a complimentary cold juice before boarding the ferry for the return trip to St. Thomas.

Each group is accompanied by trained and experienced guides. The bike ride is on paved and dirt roads with a tiny bit of single track for good measure. During the ride there are frequent sightings of red footed tortoises, iguanas, lizards, hermit crabs, a large variety of birds (the diving pelicans are endlessly fascinating) and of course sea life; fish, turtles, and rays. The 'sag wagon' is available at all times during the ride just in case someone needs it, and it carries personal possessions for our riders.

Riders have been heard to comment that the Water Island Adventures excursion was ...the best thing about their whole vacation- except for the ship (or hotel) itself... .
